Summer of Night

"It's the summer of 1960 in Elm Haven, Illinois, and five 12-year old boys are forming the bonds that a lifetime of changes will never erase. But then a dark cloud threatens the bright promise of summer vacation: on the last day of school, their classmate Tubby Cooke vanishes. Soon, the group discovers stories of other children who once disappeared from Elm Haven. And there are other strange things happening in town: unexplained holes in the ground, a stranger dressed as a World War I soldier, and a rendering-plant truck that seems to be following the five boys. The friends realize that there is a terrible evil lurking in Elm Haven...and they must be the ones to stop it."

Grimdragon readalong chapter 1-10:

1. Are you enjoying the book so far?
Yes! I really like it and think the writing really gets me to feel and remember what summer was like when I was a kid.

2. Have you read any other Dan Simmons books? How does this compare?
No, this is my first by him. I also have "A winter haunting", I think I bought both books about 10 years ago.

3. Who is your current favorite character?
I like many of them in their own parts (if you understand what I mean), Mike is one (maybe we have gotten to know him more than some of the others?)

4. Do you find the characters believable? Fully developed? Relatable?
Yes, we don't know so much about everybody yet I think but I hope it will come soon.

5. What do you think happened to Tubby Cooke?
Something bad, dont know what or who.

Grimdragon readalong chapter 11-21
1. Are you finding the book scary?
Not so much at this point.

2. Who or what do you think killed & ate the little girl in January 1900? The soldier?
Maybe, or something else that was evil.

3. Do you think Duane & his family are specifically targeted because of Duane’s research?
Yes, he knows too much. I liked him and he was my favourite at this point

4. What the hell is that massive Tremors-like slug creature?
I don't know and don't want to know! Scary that they can come up just when ou don't expect it

5. Dan Simmons is known for using a lot of detail in his writing. Do you find that it adds to the story, or slows it down?
I sometimes get a little frustrated and want to skip or read fast to get the story going. A little hard when I don't have English as my first language. But I really like his style.

6. What do you think of Cordie?
She is strange but I hope we will see more of her.

7. Do you think the Borgia Bell was evil when it was brought over from Italy or did it become so after the events of the hanging?
I think it was evil from the begining.

8. WHAT IN ACTUAL FUCK IS GOING ON?!?
Yes, right! What is going on!!! (And I never Heard of a rendering truck Before so I had to google it. Doesn't sound like anything I want to see/smell :P)

Grimdragon readalong chapter 22-32
1. How do you explain Mr. Grumbacher finding a dead cat in Dale’s basement, and not Tubby Cooke?
The "ghosts" are showing the kids frightening stuff just to scare them and making them not tell adults.

2. Do you think Mink Harper is a reliable source of information?
Yes, I think he remembers what went on back then.

3. Has your opinion of Jim Harlen changed at all?
I like him, he is tough.

4. OK….the Michelle & Mike scene….too much given their ages? Creepy? Sweet? Both?
Not necesary for the story but nothing that couldn't happen I guess.

5. The soldier William Campbell Phillips.. was he the “right” man that should have been hung in the belfry?
I think so.

6. What do you think happened to Father Cavanaugh?
He was infected with evil and will turn to the same as the other things.

7. “Duane McBride was dead, as was Duane’s uncle, but people accepted death by accident–even the terrible death of a child–while the mutilation of a few cats would keep them whispering and locking their doors for weeks or months to come.” Do you agree with this?
The cats could not kill them selves, but Duane and his uncle could have benn accidents.

8. Will anyone have survived by the time this book is done?!?
Exaktly what I think! I am affraid for the main characters now and don't want them to know too much! I had to put the book down for a while just for the characters to be safe...

Grimdragon readalong chapter 33-42:
1. Did you enjoy the Summer of Night experience?! (PLEASE SAY YES, PLEASE SAY YES!)
YES!

2. If this was your first Simmons, what were your thoughts on his writing? If you have read him before, how does this compare?
I really enjoyed his style and will read more of his books. I had this book in my shelf for maybe 10 years or so, thanks to this I finally read it (and loved it). Sometimes I wanted to speed read to get things happen, but I do that when it's very exciting.

3. Do you plan on reading the other books in this series (Seasons of Horror)?
I have A winter haunting but will save it til winter .)

4. Do you think the evil that haunted the town is gone for good?
I hope so, but I guess it never is if there is a sequel

5. Do you think you would have handled shit as calmly & maturely as the kids did?!
Not really, I think I would stay in my room and read about others having adventures ;)

6. Is a group readalong something that would interest you again in the future? Do you prefer reading a book throughout the month in weekly sections or would you rather have one big discussion after a few weeks?
I really enjoyed reading with others. I had a lot to do at work so I was a little bit behind the rest but I am trying to read what everyone thought now. Next time I will start early to have more time to read in english.
